Officials try to provide access to succession trail:
About a hundred years ago, Henry Chandler Cowles took his University of Chicago students to this beach in order to study the ecology of sand dunes. What he formulated while working here was the controversial theory of succession. US Park officials have built a boardwalk along a one-mile path that takes visitors not only from the beach to a black oak forest, but also on a journey through time, from a place where sand was exposed only a few years ago to a forest that grew on sand uncovered by the receding shoreline several thousand years ago.
