|Field Trip - Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore - 9 of 12

Access to black oak forest severely restricted today:
While officials are rebuilding the boardwalk in a place that is not covered by sand, the trail is off-limits. This sign is near what would be the exit, and the black oak forest is visible in the distance. The trail ordinarily forms a loop, from the beach, through the various stages of succession, to the climax community (black oak, sassafras, basswood, flowering dogwood, witch hazel), and then back to the beginning. Some jack pines, growing further south that usual, also inhabit these dunes.
